Languages 2024-2025

Spanish

Our intent:

MFL curriculum should focus on enabling pupils to make substantial progress in one language, providing an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and enabling pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing.

We aim to:

  • Focus on practical communication
  • Understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied
  • develop accurate pronunciation and intonation
  • appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language

Year 3
In Year 3, the children begin to explore Spanish through games, songs and rhymes.  We focus on colours, food, animals and our families. They listen and show understanding of single words through physical response, they listen and identify rhyming words. The children can read and show understanding of familiar words. Also, they can write and say simple words.

Year 4
In Year 4, the children begin the year exploring and learning greetings and labelling our bodies in Spanish.  We then develop our knowledge and oral Spanish through learning names for members of our family, items in our classroom and foods.  We develop our spoken language to extend sentences with I like, I don't like...
They listen and show understanding of single words through physical response. The children read and show understanding of familiar single words and write single familiar words.
Year 5
In Year 5, the children can listen an show understanding of simple sentences, containing familiar words through physical response. They can engage in short conversations using a range of simple questions and starting to use familiar vocabulary to say several longer sentences using a language scaffold. We pronounce familiar words, read and write simple sentences, engage in conversations and we love listening to Spanish song, stories and rhymes.
Year 6
In Year 6, we consolidate our Spanish learning and extend our oral work.  We develop two way conversations and explore a Spanish town and how we would go shopping including asking for items in a supermarket. The children in Year 6 demonstrate understanding of Spanish grammar and they start to predict the pronunciation of familiar words. They also like to develop their Spanish skills through songs, stories and rhymes.
European Day of Languages 2023-2024

On this day, our children celebrated and promoted awareness of the importance of language learning. Each class discussed the benefits of language learning, the linguistic diversity of Europe and each celebration was different across the school.
